Old Newton House is a wonderful historic house overlooking Doune Castle in Perthshire. Your own exclusive use 16th Century fortified house for up to 12 guests. Perfect for friends & family gatherings and small unique weddings.
Old Newton is described in the Scottish history books as a 16 th century L-plan fortalice, although there is evidence for some sort of building on the site from the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland in 1435. The house was built for defence and therefore only recently, in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, were the rooms on the ground floor developed for domestic use. All bedrooms were upstairs many of them steep.
It has welcomed some of Scotland’s most illustrious guests including Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the enlightenment philosopher David Hume, and Sir Walter Scott who wrote The Lady of the Lake here. More recently it has been home to the cast and crew of Outlander the popular series written by Diana Gabaldon, who also came to visit. New guests will recognise the many scenes from the first series that were filmed here.
Dogs are most welcome with certain restrictions on the Estate.
There are five public rooms. The morning room, the dining room, the music room - with a Steinway piano, the longroom, which as its name suggests is a very large family room with TV and snooker table. Finally at the heart of the house is a good sized kitchen with an Aga. There is also a large scullery for food preparation and storage.
The house has its own chapel, which may be hired for weddings or other ceremonies.
The house is set on a private estate surrounded by acres of parkland. There is a walled garden for the exclusive use of guests. There is parking for about 6 cars.
